NICA Leader Summit (Online)

Who

Leader Summit Training is for head coaches or team directors starting a team or taking over a team. It is also appropriate for coaches seeking to advance their NICA license level or obtain CEUs to maintain their current license.

  • Not required for Level 1 coaches
  • Not required for level 2 coaches, but optional attendance can be used as 8 CEUs toward licensing requirements
  • Required for coaches first obtaining a Level 3 license; optional attendance can be used as 8 CEUs toward maintaining current license

What

The Nevada Interscholastic Cycling Association annual Leader Summit brings together coaches, assistant coaches, ride leaders, parent volunteers, team directors and anyone interested in learning more about our coaching and teaching methods to develop skills and knowledge, share strategies and build community. This conference will promote a well-rounded approach to coaching that creates an environment in which high school and middle school students can grow and thrive. This is a great opportunity to spend a day in the company of peers and energize for the upcoming season.

This online event consists of a five parts:

Pt 1: Working with NICA Student Athletes
Pt 2: Coach Licensing and Registration
Pt 3: Starting and Managing a NICA Team
Pt4: Risk Management & Safety Reporting
Pt 5: NICA Handbook

These courses are required for a first-time Level 3 coach and will also fulfill the continuing education requirements for NICA Coach Licensing Levels 2-3. Additional requirements for NICA Coach Licensing Levels 2-3 can be found on NICA’s Coach Licensing Program page.

Where/When

You can register for the week long version consisting of a one hour session for five days, or one five hour session on a Saturday.

Prerequisites

Prior to attending the Leader Summit, please complete the mandatory Risk Management and NICA Student-Athlete Coaching Philosophy webinars and tests (see links and requirements on the NICA Coach Licensing Program page). They’re free and can be completed in the comfort of your own home. You do not need to complete the other requirements before attending the Leader Summit.


On-The-Bike Skills 101 (OTB 101)

Who

  • NICA On-The-Bike Skills Training is designed for new and experienced coaches looking for effective skills and techniques for leading team practices and/or smaller groups as part of a team practice.
  • Not required for Level 1 Coaches
  • Required for coaches when first obtaining a Level 2 or 3 license and optional attendance can be used as 8 CEUs

What

This event provides the opportunity for participants to learn the “nuts and bolts” of running safe and fun team practices and preparations for race season. Expect interactive lectures during the morning seminar and on-the-bike practical application during the afternoon sessions.

Be prepared to be on your bike in a skills clinic setting for the entire afternoon.

On-The-Bike Skills 201 (OTB 201)

Who

  • NICA On-The-Bike Skills 201 is open for coaches that have completed OTB 101

What

On-the-Bike Skills 201 is the second level of mountain bike skills instruction for NICA coaches of student-athletes. On-the-Bike Skills 101 provides insight to help coaches provide fundamental skills instruction, manage a practice, and lead team rides. On-the-Bike Skills 201 continues with progressive skill development and further resources for coaches to manage more advanced practice activities for growing teams. The key objectives for this training are:

  • Reinforce effective teaching methodology and skills instruction techniques; Introduce progressive skills required by riders of varying age, maturation, ability level, and goals;
  • Provide the coach with practice activities to reinforce student-athlete skill development; and
  • Facilitate the creation and use of a progressive practice plan for student-athlete skills development and team activities.

Be prepared to be on your bike in a skills clinic setting for the entire afternoon.

Coach Retreat (TBD)

Who

  • Open to all Level 2-3 NICA Coaches

What

The 2.5-Day Coach Retreat event is designed for experienced NICA Coaches within the Nevada League and beyond. This unique event provides the opportunity for experienced coaches to network with other experienced coaches, Nevada League staff, guest educators and NICA leadership. Expect interactive coach driven round-table discussions under the guidance of industry experts. Learn what is working for other teams and other leagues across the US. Discover solutions to blocks and challenges facing scholastic mountain bike teams locally and nationally. Event format allows for morning classroom style learning followed by afternoon skills classes and group free riding opportunities in highly sought after “destination” trail systems. Retreat amenities (lodging, camping, food… etc) varies based off of event location. As a result retreat pricing will vary greatly from year to year.

The Coach Retreat is open to current NICA Level 2 & 3 Coaches, within the Nevada League or within another NICA League. This event is not specifically designed to fulfill continuing education unit requirements for NICA Coach Licensing Levels, however some CEU’s may be earned. Check with Nevada League leadership about Retreat CEU’s before signing up.

NICA Approved Wilderness First Aid (WFA) – 8 hour

Who

  • Level 2 and 3 NICA Coach (NEW REQUIREMENT IN 2019 – BOTH LEVEL 2 AND 3 COACHES ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE WFA OR EQUIVALENT FIRST AID TRAINING)

What

The Wilderness First Aid Course will meet all requirements outlined by NICA for the WFA NICA approved certification, which will include Patient Assessment and Movement, as well as Managing Major Trauma, Wounds, and Musculoskeletal Injuries.  We will also devote time to Common Medical and Environmental Problems, particularly those relevant to Cycling Coaches and Leaders.

While we’ll cover the full spectrum of required topics, there will be an emphasis on simple strategies for handling common problems.  There will be time for questions and discussion in the highly interactive learning environment.  Significant time will also be devoted to hands-on practice, scenarios, and case studies to help ingrain knowledge gained during lecture.

Where/When

November 7th: Nica Approved WFA/CPR/AED Training will be an 8 hour class at a cost of $105. This will include your CPR certification. To register for this event, please follow this link for WFA/CPR/AED Training.
